The situation in the African country of Burundi is tense right now as reports claim that a coup has been formed against the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza amid unrest over his bid to be re-elected to a third term. Thousands of people in the capital, Bajumbura celebrated the announcement by Major General Godefroid Niyombare.
The presidency however says the coup has been foiled and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. Mr Nkuruziza is in Tanzania for a summit and is reportedly trying to return back to Burundi.
Announcing the coup in a statement read t reporters in a military base Gen Niyombare said he did not recognize the leadership because the president's bid for a third term violated the constitution.
The unrest in Burundi started April 26 and so far, about 20 people have been reported dead and thousands of Burundians have fled to neighboring states.
President Nkurunziza has rejected calls to postpone next months election. However the summit in Tanzania urged him to do so.
The 51 years old former rebel leader argues that he is entitled to run for a third term because he was first appointed to the role by parliament in 2005. The constitution states that a president should govern only for two terms, but earlier this month, the court upheld Mr Nkurunziza's interpretation.
